Beirut, another "Pearl" of the Mediterranean of Yesteryear
Colourful images of a once-vibrant, modern city…
Today, we’ll spend some more time in the capital of Lebanon, Beirut, and we’ll do so well before the civil war and subsequent violence that commenced in the 1980s.
So, without much further ado, here goes. Enjoy!
Modern Beirut
Above, “Modern Beirut”, sadly undated, but I’d go for that’s prior to around 1980; below, the “grand hotels quarter”.
Slightly Less Modern Beirut
Above, the French Avenue (Avenue des Français), mailed in 1957; below, “the city and the harbour”, mailed in 1961.
Below, another colourful image from 1967, showing “the Phoenician harbour and the Crusaders’ castle”:
Next time, we’ll endeavour into the hinterlands of Beirut!
Wonderful pictures. Thank you.
Early 80’s-I was working retail and a couple of young men came in. They were from Lebanon. They were encouraging people to continue visiting their country, hoping it would return to the normal, modern place it had once been. They said, “Ignore the news. It’s a beautiful place!”
