Thank you so much for this - Africa is personal to me.
I would pick up and go back in a second if I could. During the lockdowns in Australia I was considering it, and many South Africans actually did, choosing the chaos over the tyranny.
- Is there maybe software that can help date photos, e.g., by identification of car models? On my phone, I have an app that can classify plants, and another that can identify birds from their songs.
- What about a project that contrasts old postcards showing the seashore with current photos, just to get some data points regarding rising of sea levels or the absence thereof? Recently, I saw one such example somewhere in the Substack notes. Of course, the question remains at what point in the tides photos have been taken.
I am thinking about these kinds of things, but I would first need to find the money to digitise the postcards uniformly. So far, I am scanning them manually and rendering them into *.png format (which means that, at 300 dpi, you may also download and reuse these images).
It's on my bucket list, as is a kind of 'digital' project that maps the postcards, does relational analysis, and the like, but I'm in the very early stages of all of it for lack of time. Even 'worse', so to say, I'm at the thinking stage of the data that I wish to collect.
As to the shore lines, well, I think some of the older "canonical" postcards (by which I mean: near-standardised POVs) might be of use, but for the time after 1979, we do have satellite images available…

Well, if you liked this one, wait for the next two instalments!
What an excellent collection Stephan. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Bahsan, and I'm very happy you like it.

Oh, my, what kind of questions--thanks a lot!

Such a beautiful area. Did you ever see the movie Hatari? Lots of scenes in that area
I've watched a bunch of movies, but I'm unsure about that one.
Old John Wayne movie about a group catching wild animals for zoos
That increases the likelihood of me having watched (and subsequently forgotten about) it. Cheers!
