I always thought that Portugal would be a beautiful place to visit. There were a lot of Portuguese in the area where I grew up. Farmers and dairymen, mostly

Well, I would not know as Portugal is one of the places I've never been to.

The Central Valley in California had a large population of agrarian immigrants-Italian, Portuguese, Greek, Dutch, as well as Mexican. They brought a lot of knowledge with them. They worked hard and saved their money.

But their traditions came with them. One girl I graduated with had an arranged marriage. They were from Crete. One of my brother’s friends, also. They were Italian. Important connections between families.

Oh my, what kind of traditions--but then again, relative freedom to choose one's partner is a very, very recent value.

As to California, one of the core imports was a red grape (Plavac) from southern Dalmatia, which immigrants from Dubrovnik brought with them in the late 19th century; it kicked off California as a wine-growing region…
