Apart from this aspect, I think another issue is--that all these picture postcards are certainly staged to a large extent (although, as per Wikipedia, one could actually ask them):

I'm sure you're right about staging. I don't think we expect the Dutch to all wear wooden clogs, or German males to be in Lederhosen, my brothers had them when young! Now, it's brand names they want, the young ones, I mean.
