As to Nancy's look and feel, while I've never been, Lorraine in particular and Burgundy in general was a kind of 'in-between' territory situation along the contested boundaries between the French and German realms for centuries. It didn't become French before 1766, and the dukes of Lorraine eventually 'took over' most of Central Europe by virtue of Francis Stephen of Lorraine marrying Maria Theresa of Austria, thus creating the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.
