My only guess is that it refers to the George Cross, the British military medal that was awarded to Malta collectively during World War 2. It’s represented on their flag, though I didn’t know anyone actually appended it to the name of the country. But some of those postcards would presumably have been sold to British tourists, so maybe?
Saint Elmo - patron saint of sailors. Beautiful building. Thanks for sharing.
I was humming the song "Saint Elmo's Fire" in my head while writing these lines!
Interesting thanks for sharing and makes sense with a seafaring island
Malta G. C. ??

There's apparently also a documentary/movie (1942) about this, and Wikipedia also has a dedicated entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Award_of_the_George_Cross_to_Malta
Thank you. Makes sense
