Oh, they were invented in the late 1860s (tellingly, in the Austrian Empire), but their breakthrough occurred during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870/71. Back then, these were known as correspondence cards, at first w/o images. Pictures came a bit later, for it was (still) too expensive to mass-produce them and print them on cardboard. By the late 1880s, this was had changed, and the "Golden Age of the Picture Postcard" lasted from c. 1890 through c. 1920.
This is so GREAT! I am going to take my time and read. We are Hungarian. My husband and his Mother came from Hungary to escape Communism years ago. This is so SPECIAL. Thank YOU!
Oh, Thank YOU. You are so kind. I'm going to show these to my husband. He was born in Budapest, Hungary. He and his mother came from Communist Hungary to escape Communism. I met him in the US in central Florida. I am from near Pittsburgh, PA. I am Hungarian. My Family settled in Western PA years ago. If you would like sometime, I can tell you their story. Through your postcards I will learn of my heritage, too :-)
I had no idea that postcards have been around that long.
The business-minded in the Middle Ages made a fortune off of “parts” of various apostles and holy figures.
These are beautiful. Thank you

Oh, that's so amazing--this is exactly what I find most gratifying about posting these vintage postcards!
I did take the liberty to send you all my Budapest-themed postcards (that I've scanned yet) via email; do check your "junk mail" folder, if in doubt.

You're very much welcome, and I hope your husband enjoys these postcards, too!
Speaking of Florida, did you see these two postings I did:

Thanks for reminding me. I will check them out. So, much history in postcards. I remember you doing one on Dubrovnik, Croatia. Steve and
his Mother visited there years ago. They Loved It :-)
